What You Will Learn At Fashion Design School
As most people are finding out when they attend a fashion design school these days, the course they are enrolled in is not all about cutting, stitching, and sewing. In fact, this only represents a fraction of a much larger, much more comprehensive course, which is sure to boost industry knowledge, and provide a solid base for a career in the fashion design industry.
As you might expect, it is impossible for us to cover everything which you might find in a fashion design school course, simply because of the range of topics that would be covered in a 1 to 2 year period. Additionally, an exact list of subjects would be very misleading because each and every fashion design school has a unique syllabus.
Learning the Basics
Obviously, one of the things you can count on being taught from absolutely any fashion design school is the absolute basics.
For example, the following topics might be taught in the first semester or term of your college degree:
- Basic sewing techniques.
- Basic cutting and stitching techniques.
- Color choices, clashes, and codes.
- A brief history of fashion design and the state of the current industry.
People often cringe when they hear the word “history”, because it brings back memories of prehistoric history lessons which they had to endure whilst they were at high school. Fortunately, if you are lucky enough to attend a fashion design school, you will find that the history lessons included in the basic syllabus are slightly more interesting than learning about 13th century ancient Egypt.
Specialised Fashion Design Courses
If you already know the basics of fashion design, or if you have been in the industry for a number of years and feel that you do not need to have this information repeated to you - a specialised fashion design course might be preferable.
There are a number of these specialised courses - and often they are taught at the more reputable school, given the importance of the information taught in them.
For example, if you were to take a liking to the topic of wedding dress design, then a specialised wedding dress design course may be of preference to the overall “fashion design” course which would be recommended to people with no previous experience, or who are just starting out in the industry.
